Want to help with 1st grade shapes & geometry basics at home? Here is what your 1st grader learns, what a typical question looks like, and simple ways to help, no lesson plan needed.
Every example below comes from BAMS Academy's Shapes & Geometry Basics practice, the same questions students answer on the site.
Shapes & Geometry Basics in 1st grade, skill by skill
Identifying 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. BAMS Academy breaks the unit into the skills below (part of all 1st grade math topics). Each comes with one of its practice questions.
Count right angles in a shape
Which shape has more right angles: a rectangle or a square? Enter the number of right angles of the shape with more.
Answer: 4. A rectangle has 4 right angles and a square has 4, so the answer is 4.
Which shape has more right angles: a triangle or a square? Enter the number of right angles of the shape with more.
Answer: 4. A triangle has 0 right angles and a square has 4, so the answer is 4.
Count corners of 2D shapes and compare side counts
How many corners does a triangle have? (Choices: 3; 4; 1; 2.)
Answer: 3. A triangle has 3 corners — the same as its number of sides.
Which shape has more sides: a square or a pentagon? Enter the number of sides of the shape with more.
Answer: 5. A square has 4 sides and a pentagon has 5 sides, so the answer is 5.
Identify 3D shapes (cube, sphere, cone, cylinder) by their properties
Which 3D shape matches this description: It is perfectly round with no flat faces, no edges, and no vertices. (Choices: cone; cube; sphere; rectangular prism.)
Answer: sphere. A sphere matches: It is perfectly round with no flat faces, no edges, and no vertices.
Which 3D shape matches this description: It has 6 flat square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. (Choices: square pyramid; cylinder; cube; sphere.)
Answer: cube. A cube matches: It has 6 flat square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices.
What a 1st grade question looks like
Example 1
Question: Which shape has more right angles: a square or a rectangle? Enter the number of right angles of the shape with more.
How to solve it: A square has 4 right angles and a rectangle has 4, so the answer is 4.
Answer: 4
Example 2
Question: Which shape has more right angles: a triangle or a rectangle? Enter the number of right angles of the shape with more.
How to solve it: A triangle has 0 right angles and a rectangle has 4, so the answer is 4.
Answer: 4
Mix-ups to listen for
Question: How many corners does a rectangle have? (Choices: 4; 2; 3; 5.)
Answer: 4.
A student who picks "5" usually counted one too many corners.
Question: Which 3D shape matches this description: It has 1 flat circular face, 1 curved surface, and 1 vertex at the top. (Choices: square pyramid; sphere; cone; cylinder.)
Answer: cone.
A student who picks "cylinder" usually confused with a visually similar solid.
Question: How many corners does a triangle have? (Choices: 3; 4; 1; 2.)
Answer: 3.
A student who picks "2" usually counted one too few corners.
Question: Which 3D shape matches this description: It is perfectly round with no flat faces, no edges, and no vertices. (Choices: cone; cube; sphere; rectangular prism.)
Answer: sphere.
A student who picks "cube" usually confused with another solid shape.
Question: Which 3D shape matches this description: It has 6 flat square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. (Choices: square pyramid; cylinder; cube; sphere.)
Answer: cube.
A student who picks "cylinder" usually confused with a third solid shape.
How you can help at home
- Ask your child to say each step out loud before choosing an answer. Explaining a step is how a gap in understanding shows up.
- Check wrong answers against the explanation, then try a similar question right away while the idea is fresh.
- Keep sessions short and regular: a handful of math questions most days works better than one long session.
Keep practicing
The fastest way to build confidence is a few questions at a time, with feedback on each answer. Start with Shapes & Geometry Basics practice for grade 1, where every question comes with a step-by-step explanation.
