A child stuck on this year’s work is often missing something from two years ago. Here is how to find the actual gap instead of drilling the symptom.
When a child is struggling with a topic, the instinct is to practise that topic harder. Sometimes that works. Often it does not, because the thing going wrong is not the topic on the page — it is a skill underneath it that never became automatic, and every new lesson is being built on top of it.
A student who cannot solve 3x + 7 = 22 may not have an equations problem at all. If negative numbers are still effortful, or dividing is still a slow deliberate process, then every equation costs them three hard things at once and they run out of working memory before they reach the answer.
Drilling equations in that situation feels productive and changes very little. The topic on the worksheet is the symptom; the arithmetic underneath is the gap.
The useful question is not "was this wrong?" but "which step was wrong?". Ask your child to talk through a missed problem out loud. The place where the explanation becomes vague is almost always where the gap is — they can usually tell you what to do, right up until the point where they cannot.
Look for mistakes that repeat across different topics. A sign error in equations, in fractions, and in word problems is not three topic problems; it is one gap showing up in three places.
If a gap is real, practising a grade below is not a step backwards — it is the shortest route forward. Children often find this a relief rather than an insult, because it is the first work in a while that has felt solvable.
Keep the return trip short. A week or two on the underlying skill, then straight back to the current topic to see whether it has loosened. If it has, the gap was real; if nothing changed, the gap is somewhere else and it is worth looking again rather than digging in the same spot.
