Competition prep is a different skill from classroom work — faster, narrower, and more about recognition than discovery. Here is how to approach it.
Academic competitions ask for something school rarely does: correct answers, quickly, under pressure, on a narrow slice of material. A student who is comfortable in class can still find their first contest bruising, and the reason is usually pacing rather than knowledge. The good news is that the gap is specific enough to train directly.
Classroom problems are built to teach a method. Contest problems are built to be solved fast by someone who recognises the shape of them — the same handful of structures recur, and experienced competitors spend very little time deciding what kind of problem they are looking at.
That is why volume of exposure matters more here than it does for a unit test. The aim is not to see a problem for the first time on contest day, and most of the benefit comes from having met the pattern before rather than from any single clever technique.
Speed and accuracy are best trained apart before they are combined. Work untimed until the method is reliable, then add the clock — doing both at once usually produces fast, confident, wrong answers.
When timed practice starts, practise skipping as an explicit skill. Knowing when to leave a question is worth real points, and it is the single thing most first-time competitors do worst.
Competitions work best as something a child does because the problems are interesting, not because a result is expected. Students who enjoy the puzzles keep entering; students who are being measured tend to stop after a disappointing round.
